NEW ORLEANS -
Grieving family and friends are questioning the circumstances surrounding the death of a 16-year-old after her body was found last week in New Orleans East.Kaylan Ward’s body was found dismembered last Friday along Interstate 10 near the Bullard Avenue exit, according to the New Orleans Police Department.
“It feels like my world is gone,” Kenisha Martin-Nelson said. “This is my first child, my only daughter.”Martin-Nelson has been mourning the loss of her 16-year-old daughter, who was a student at McDonogh 35 High School headed to 11th grade.
“I knew my daughter would never be walking on the intestate. There was no need for her to walk on the interstate,” Martin-Nelson said. “So it never crossed my mind that it was her.”
Martin-Nelson said days before the gruesome discovery, she and Ward had gotten into an argument and her daughter went to stay with friends. Martin-Nelson said the two continued to talk on the phone until their last call, when Ward said she was ready to return home.
“She was upset. She could not get the concept that she had a mother that was not settling for anything. I wanted the best for her,” Martin-Nelson said.
Martin-Nelson is no stranger to tragedy. Six years ago her husband was murdered, and now she’s preparing to bury her daughter, who she calls her princess.
On Tuesday family and friends held a vigil for Ward as Martin-Nelson pleaded for anyone with information in the death of her daughter to come forward.
“Just please tell whoever she was with, whatever man, whatever boy, whatever girl, it does not matter at this point,” Martin-Nelson said. “I just need to know who was this person, this missing link, that nobody seems to know about that my child was in a car with. I will not stop until they find them.”
